Submission Guidelines

bending spoons is a not-for-profit, ad-free, submission-based literary zine. Because we are not, at this time, able to offer any sort of monetary compensation for published submissions, we are also not charging any sort of fee for submissions.

We are devoted to showcasing works of speculative fiction. Speculative fiction is an all encompassing term which includes works of science fiction, fantasy, horror, as well as anything that defies genre boundaries and challenges the imagination and human existence as we know it.

All talent is encouraged.  We welcome submissions from the unpublished and the published artists and no special privilege is given to either.  Inclusion in our publication is based strictly on the quality of the work submitted. We do ask, however, that all work be original and unpublished.  Originally yours goes without saying but it should also be original to us.  Please do not recycle previously published material because A) you are hoping to get it into our print anthology and/or B) you are certain that because someone else published it, we will too.

As for subject matter, we want to see everyday characters in extraordinary situations, extraordinary characters and situations in everday life. We are imaginative, creative people and we want to be challenged. That said, on to the guidelines.

THE GUIDLINES:

Fiction submissions should be 5000 words or fewer.   We are not going to plug your submission into Word and hit the word count tool; we're basically looking for work less than 7 pages.

Serial installments are permitted 7,500 words to avoid unnessary plot breaks.  Submissions of serial installments will only be accepted two installments at a time to ensure that the next chapter is available and readers will not be left hanging.

Bios are encouraged.  If you would like a bio included with your work, please include 50-150 words with your original submission.  A photo may accompany, no larger than 200x300 pixels and in JPEG format only.

Poetry is not accepted.  There are too many complications involved with the subjective nature of poetry (Is the "ghost" internal or external, literal or figurative?) and, besides, there are three times as many publications devoted to poetry as to fiction.  If you are a poet, sf/f/h or otherwise, we are confident you will find an avenue for your words.

THE TECHNICAL STUFF:

All work submitted to bending spoons MUST be embedded in the body of an email.  No attachments will be opened.

Because of the possible formatting issues that come with email submissions, paragraphs should be double-spaced between, tabs omitted (questions? Format your story the same way the text on this page is formatted).  Failure to do this may or may not cause your submission to be pushed aside until later and subsequently forgotten.

All work should be submitted to contact@spoonbenderpress.net.  If you are a return contributor and have been using our hotmail address up to this point, that address is no more.  Due to the spam problems inherent with hotmail, we have deleted the account.
